(Washington D.C. – September 26, 2014) R. Blake Curd, M.D., orthopedic surgeon and president of Orthopedic Institute of Sioux Falls, SD, has been installed as president of Physician Hospitals of America (PHA) at its annual meeting in Phoenix, AZ, Sept. 24-26.  Dr. Curd succeeds Paul Kerens, senior executive officer of Kansas City Orthopedic Institute, Leawood Kansas.

"The presidency of Dr. Curd comes at a particularly vital time for POHs as they face a level of uncertainty due to changes in federal and state legislation," says Kerens “He currently serves as a member of the South Dakota State Senate and therefore will bring to PHA an intimate knowledge of the legislative process."  He has previously served the Sioux Falls area in the State House of Representatives from 2009-11.

Dr. Curd received his medical degree from the University Of Missouri School Of Medicine in Kansas City.  He served his residency at Wilford Hall Medical Center, San Antonio, TX, as well as a fellowship at Indiana Hand Center, Indianapolis.  He is certified with the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and specializes in hand surgery, congenital hand reconstruction, microvascular surgery, upper extremity surgery and tissue transfer.

"As a kid I was fascinated by medicine," recalls Dr. Curd. "A family friend was an OR nurse and suggested I volunteer at my local hospital.  I thought I wanted to become an emergency doctor, but in medical school I found that I really enjoyed orthopedics and surgery the most.  I like helping fix people from the start of their treatment to their final recovery."

Dr. Curd has a variety of interests.  He works as assistant team physician for the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Sioux Falls Canaries.  He enjoys airplane piloting, snowboarding, mountain climbing, and scuba diving.
