The Next Paradigm in Medicine - ACA: Opportunities and Consequences

ACA is going to potentially result in up to 32 million patients. The rate of our population undergoing surgery is 6% (51.4MM surgeries and 313MM citizens). If 10% of new patients will enter the system, we can expect that no less than a 10% in the volume of surgery performed, or an increase from 51.4MM to about 57 MM surgeries. Superimposing this on the macro changes impacting the US population demographics,  what can we expect in terms of surgical volume and types of cases?   With an increase in the volume of surgery and relative increases in specific types of cases, how can hospitals prepare?  How is this preparation impacted by declining financial resources at their avail?  This first tranche of preparedness is critical for facilities to survive, thrive and have the wherewithal to succeed when the second tranche of preparedness takes center stage.

This presentation will take a non-partisan view of ACA changes that are likely to result in an increase in perioperative and surgical device demands on the system, the likely outcomes given a relatively fixed supply of hospitals, physicians and nurses--and all of this in front of a backdrop of populous thirsty for documented and confirmed quality.    How will the perioperative and surgical services find a way to deliver more services, at a higher quality, for less cost and with acceptable wait times? There are solutions that hospitals can evaluate and deploy centered on alignment. Success is possible.  As the marketplace evolves over the next 5 years, how can facilities prepare for the next paradigm and thrive through preparedness.
